Dear family and friends of WCPC:
Last week I started meeting with the
officers-elect who will begin their ministry on the Session and
the Board of Deacons in June. I’ve always enjoyed these
particular classes. One reason is to hear the stories of these
men and women God has called into leadership. Their
stories, their faith statements are powerful witnesses to God’s
grace and mercy found in Jesus Christ.
We also spend time focusing on the theological
statements that have shaped the Presbyterian or Reformed faith.
One of those beliefs is Predestination or Election. We hold as
Presbyterians the belief that God does for us what we cannot do
for ourselves, calling us into relationship through the power of
the Holy Spirit. That God initiates the relationship, sustains
it, and will never, never let us go. God’s gift to us is
reconciliation through God’s Son Jesus and we do nothing to
deserve or warrant it. Everything we do then is a response to
what God has done for us. When you think about it, it can’t be
any other way, lest we think by our actions we somehow merit
God’s favor. We don’t need to merit it. We already have it.
And since it’s a gift, we can never lose it.
Because as Presbyterians we have such a strong
emphasis on what God does for us, we’ve not been as strongly
committed to evangelism. After all, we reason, we don’t save
anyone, God does. God does of course and often we don’t even
understand ourselves how God brings it about, but there is one
thing I am confident of. Often the tool God uses are our
stories. As we grow in relationship with other people, as we
share our stories, of life and faith, God uses those stories as
a means of grace. God uses our stories to call others into
relationship!
Don’t be afraid to share your story. Our stories
may be the greatest gift we can give to another!
Ephesians 1: 3 – 5 –
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the
foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in
love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus
Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will…”
Your pastor,
David Jones
