Devotional Message from Dr. David Jones
March 28, 2008
Dear family and friends of WCPC:
Easter Sunday was wonderful! Worship at both services was inspiring, thanks to the leadership of our
many talented musicians and the many other volunteers who greet, usher, and assist in worship. The
pancake breakfast sponsored by our youth not only was tasty, it raised approximately $700 for our youth’s upcoming
mission trip. Even the butterflies cooperated, in spite of cooler
weather. However, like most
pastors, and maybe a few butterflies, I’m pleased we won’t have an Easter this early for another 152 years.
Easter was wonderful everywhere I imagine! Churches
full, special music, families reunited, and the message of
the empty tomb giving meaning to our living and our dying. It’s a shame Easter doesn’t come more often.
Did you know it does! In fact the ancient Church didn’t recognize one particular day as Easter
Sunday. You see they recognized every Sunday as Easter. Every
Sunday was a day of resurrection!
The same is true for disciples today. While
we may designate one Sunday in the year to celebrate Easter, every
Sunday—because the tomb is empty—is Easter. Jesus is risen! Jesus didn’t go
back into the tomb after Easter morning and wait another year for the next Easter.
Jesus is risen! Every Sunday, in fact, every day, is a day of celebration.
There is certainly a flow to our life together as a community of faith. Our celebrations of Advent and Christmas, Lent, and Pentecost,
are significant and vital. But if the tomb isn’t empty, they don’t have any real meaning. Our Easter
faith, our confession that Jesus Christ is risen, gives them
meaning, and gives us purpose and power.
Thanks be to God!
Your pastor,
David Jones
