Weekly Devotional Message from Dr. David Jones

January 18, 2008

Dear family and friends of WCPC:

There’s an upcoming program on The History Channel called “Life Without People.” It depicts a world in which you and I and everyone else are dead and gone. What, the program asks, would happen to the planet? What changes would take place? How long would it be before you wouldn’t even know we had been here?

While I don’t lie awake at night worrying about the sorts of scenarios concerning the end of humanity this program suggests, since as a Christian and as a Presbyterian I strongly believe in the sovereignty of God and in God’s plan and purpose for creation, let me ask a different question.

What would happen if the Christian Church didn’t exist? While there are many in the world today who have done many good things who aren’t Christian, and that’s always been true, if you were to take away the contributions of Christians for the last two thousand years the world would be a far different place. Christians have been at the forefront of education, medicine, human rights, and care for the disadvantaged. The motivation has been a commitment to the love and mercy and grace found in Jesus Christ.

Now let me ask another question. What would happen if The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church didn’t exist? If we weren’t here, would anyone notice?

I believe if WCPC didn’t exist it would be noticed. Not only has this congregation been at the forefront of life in The Woodlands since its birth, it remains a vital part of this community’s life, both through our actions as a community and through the individual contributions of each member. I also believe our presence in the wider community of Presbyterians, in our presbytery and beyond, has made a difference. And when you consider how many individual lives have been touched, both here and around the world, lives given encouragement and hope by the ministry and mission of WCPC, we’ve made an impact greater than our numbers may suggest.

Finally let me ask you this. What if you weren’t part of this community of disciples? Would you be missed? Does your contribution matter? I hope you know it would. Your faithfulness, combined with the faithfulness of others, is why WCPC has made a difference in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Your pastor,

David Jones
