Devotional Message from David Jones
April
7, 2006
Dear
family and friends of WCPC:
In
“The Heidelberg Catechism,” the first question asked is,
“What is your only comfort,
in life and in death?”
And
the answer,
“That
I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but
to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own
blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me
from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that
without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my
head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation.
Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life,
and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live
for him.”
There
is probably no season in the church’s life as significant as Holy
Week. During Holy Week we remember and experience once again the
great worth that God attaches to each of us—a worth so great He
did not spare even His One and Only Son. God does not seek out
worth, He creates us. He creates it in you and in me as we are
redeemed by Christ’s sacrifice and as we live faithful and
obedience lives, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Currently
I am teaching the officers-elect who will begin their
responsibilities in June. It’s one of my most enjoyable teaching
opportunities. As Presbyterians, as we discussed during the
training, we are redeemed for salvation and service. In other words,
it’s not just about my own personal salvation, it’s about
bringing glory to God both through my redemption and through my
willingness to be used as an instrument of grace in the living of my
life. If I do belong, body and soul, in life and in death to Jesus
Christ, can we do any less. So Holy Week isn’t just about
remembering what Jesus has done, but being open to what He may be
calling you and me to do with our lives as faithful disciples.
As
a reminder each weekday morning during Holy Week, Gene and I will be
offering a 20-minute worship time at 7:00am in the
Prayer
Garden
. We will share scripture, a brief meditation, prayers and music.
Also on Thursday we will gather at 7:30pm in the sanctuary for a
Maundy Thursday worship service in which we will celebrate the
sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.
May
God use the week ahead to heighten our joy on Easter morning!
