“Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with
you always, to the very end of the age.”
—Matthew
28:19-20 (NIV)
With
God’s help and guidance, the Contacts and Connections Committee
focuses on reaching out through a dual approach of outreach and
hospitality to our friends and neighbors, visitors seeking a church
home, current members and those who do not know Jesus Christ as Lord
and Savior to share the good news of the love of God in Christ.
To
do this, the Contacts and Connections Committee:
-
Coordinates
special events that bring people together to get to know each
other and develop a relationship with a living God.
-
Provides
training opportunities for evangelism outreach to current members
so that they can be encouraged and motivated to proclaim their
faith at every reasonable opportunity in daily life and to
remember that the strongest evangelism is the life led by the
individual.
-
Prepares
advertising and coordinates other communications tools to reach
out to seekers, making them aware of our presence and desire to
know them and their needs.
-
Fosters
a seeker and visitor-friendly environment by extending intentional
hospitality to all, regardless of age, race, gender, economic
status, abilities, or sexual orientation, both at the church and
in our communities. Our goal is that all may better know the love
extended to them through God’s grace and the resurrection of
Jesus Christ.
The
committee meetings are announced in the Life of the Church each
month.

Our first Thanksgiving Community Dinner, organized
by the Contacts and Connections Committee, with lots of help from
our church family.

Our first-ever entry into the South County 4th of
July parade was in 2006.

Our
2007 float—the S.S. Freedom— saluted "American
Patriots," the theme for the 2007 South County Parade.

Greeters—Intentional
Hospitality
|
|
The
Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church is a friendly, welcoming
family, and we want to extend that welcome to everyone who plans a
visit with us, whether they are a one-time visitor or become a
member. Our Sunday morning greeters are often the first impression
a person has of our church home, and may even be the first time
that person associates that smile, that warm handshake, with the
love of Christianity.
Greeters
should accurately represent our community. Wear what you wear to
church (especially your name tag): it isn’t the clothes that
make us believers. All are welcome to greet: Couples, singles,
traditional and non-traditional families. If you have children
bring them along. Children love to greet, shake hands, and hold
doors, and the visitor realizes right off that there are children
here, actively involved in the church. And your children can
invite visiting children to their Sunday School as well.
As
we grow, we have several points of entrance that we like to staff.
The only talent that is needed is a cheery and warm welcome. We
also have greeters the Information Counter and offer assistance to
visitors with name tags, Sunday School class locations, Fellowship
Hour, and, of course, restroom locations.
Celebrations:
We celebrate our greeters in February with a “Thank You
Brunch.”

Communications

Communications
at The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church include, but are
not limited to, our weekly “Life of the Church,” included in
Sunday morning’s bulletin; our monthly newsletter, The Good News
Herald; our website (www.wcpc-tx.org);
and newspaper, radio and television advertising.
If
you have an interest or experience in any of these areas, we can
use your assistance. There are proofreading and editing
opportunities with the newsletter, design and maintenance of the
website, graphics development for newspaper ads, developing and
nurturing newspaper contacts, sign preparation, etc.

Evangelism
Outreach
|
|
While
all of the other areas are a way of reaching out to those around
us—making contacts and connections—we also plan for
intentional events in which we evangelize: going into the world
and
“sharing
the good news of the sovereign love of God and calling people to
repentance, to personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord,
to active membership in the church, and to obedient service in the
world”
—from
the Definition of Evangelism
adopted by the 202nd General Assembly (1990)
First,
please understand that evangelism is not about increasing the size
of WCPC. It is about spreading the Good News and bringing more of
the un-churched to Jesus Christ.
And the Good News is that God is “in our history, in our
present, and will be in our future, calling us, loving us even in
our unfaithfulness” (from The Good News Story, Office of
Presbyterian Evangelism, PCUSA).
And
so we go in the world to set this example to those around us. We
do this through loving, caring events, where we can show the love
that God has for us, through our actions with those with whom we
have encounters. These are more personal actions. Handing someone
a bottle of water as they run or walk on a pathway. Helping them
to their car with an umbrella in a sudden rainstorm. Coordinating
a musical or comedic act to be presented in a neighborhood
location with hotdogs wil feed the spirit and the body.
Offering someone a cool drink on a hot day, or a hot drink
on a cool day. These are events where we can personally extend a
subtle invitation to those who might be seeking God, Jesus, a
church, and letting them know that we are there.
Currently,
our evangelism outreach has included floats in the 4th of July
parade, the Thanksgiving Community Dinner on Thanksgiving day,
Christmas caroling, the Nathan Clark George concert at Northshore
park, as well as CDs and booklets made available to the
congregation to share the Good News with their neighbors.
